Want to do Work from home Transcription?
What is a General Transcriptionist?
Many people come to me asking about data entry jobs at home. I always steer them away from that because of all the scams in that field. However, there is a way to make a living typing from home. You can work from home doing transcription for business owners.
A lot of times people confuse a general transcriptionist with a medical or legal transcriptionist. Often times they think that all three things fall under the duty of transcriptionist. In reality, all three areas are very different. In fact in order to provide legal or medical transcription services you generally have to be specialized and have went through some form of schooling.
As a general transcriptionist, you don’t have to be specialized and it doesn’t require any sort of training. You do need to be a fairly decent typist (about 65 or more words per minute), be able to edit your work for spelling and grammar errors and that’s about it.
A general transcriptionist that works from home will more than likely provide their services to those that are looking to have things like teleconferences, podcasts or interviews transcribed.
As a transcriptionist you can make a decent income if you put the time and effort into it. You will need to find your own clients, but the guide gives you tips on that. It will take time to build you business, but over time, you should be able to earn a nice income.
What do you need to be a good transcriptionist?
Along with good typing skills there are a few other key traits. Helpful skills are:
- Ability to apply common sense. Often you won't understand what the dictation is saying and you will need to try to put the phrase into context to figure out what the speaker means.
- A keen eye for detail. This will help in proofreading and editing to ensure you turn in the highest quality work.
- Strong work ethics. You'll have to meet deadlines and be extremely reliable.
- Good organization skills. If you have a lot of clients, it's important to stay organized.
- Good communication skills. For marketing your business and dealing with clients.
- Professionalism and discreetness (often times you'll be transcribing very sensitive documents which require full confidentiality.)
- Basic computer skills and the ability to get around a word processing program
- Good grasp of the English language
