Bible Verses for Business

Today our Bible verse for business is Proverbs 14:23:  ” In all labor there is profit.  But idle chatter leads only to poverty.”

We could go different ways with this verse, but here is how I feel I am being led to share.

In all labor there is profit – it may not always be financial profit.  There are other kinds of profit or benefit such as:

  • Helping a brother/sister in need
  • Bringing honor and glory to God
  • Learning a new skill or overcoming a challenge
  • Learning perseverance
  • Walking in obedience to God’s plan for you
  • And maybe financial benefit may come your way too!

“But idle chatter leads only to poverty.”  I will relate this to my internet business experience.  I think it is so easy, especially with all the social networking and forums, to whittle our time away and not be very productive.  We can spend hours talking on Facebook, Twitter or in forums with no real objective in mind.  We can fool ourselves and think that we have put in a day’s work, when really the majority was spent in “idle chatter.”  And what does that lead to?  According to the Bible, it leads to poverty.

Now, I do think there is a place for networking and becoming known in forums in your niche, but set a time limit.  Let that only be a small part of your day.  And when you go to one of these sites, go with an objective to add something of value to the conversations going on there.   Don’t let yourself get sidetracked, spending much more time than you intended.

I have heard some people use a timer and set it to 15 – 30 minutes.  When times up, they go on to another activity.  Myself, I leave twitter and forums mainly until evening, when I check in to see if there is anything going on that I can contribute to positively.

Let’s remember:

Labor = Profit

Idle Chatter= Poverty

Choose profit!

    Great advice!

#1 Less talking and more working … got it.

#2 Quit talking about what you are going to do and start doing it. This reminds me of a quote from Henry Ford, “you can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.”

I’m so often guilty of both of these. Thanks for the verse and the reminder. I think I am going to put it on an index card and tape it to my computer screen.

    Hi Brad,

Glad the verse was a good reminder. I like that quote from Henry Ford.

    Thanks for your comment.
