Laurie, what a beautiful story. It’s good to hear someone speak so openly about depression and how God brought them out of it. Far too often, we avoid those topics. But our own experiences can encourage so many others.

Hi Colleen,

Thanks for your comment. I admire you for the business you have run for 15 years. My dad was in an assisted living facility for about a year and a half, and what a difference it can make to the person and their family.
If you are considering a home based business that incorporates your nursing skills, I have a few suggestions.
1. Run a nursing agency from home. You would be more on the administrative end, staffing nurses for those who need them. When my dad was in a nursing home during the last week of his life, we wanted someone to stay with him through the night. I spoke with a lady who ran an agency and she filled our need. SHe was on vacation at the time, but still ran the business by her cell phone. So , most of the work should be from home.

2. Medical Transcriptin, medical billing or coding - you have the background to transition nicely into any of these.

3. Geriatric Care Management - assess an older person’s situation and determine what is needed to enable them to keep living in their home.

4. Elder Care in home - with this one and the one above, you would be out of the home a lot. But you should be able to have a more manageable schedule.

5. Senior relocation - you could be the one who arranges a move for an elderly person from their home to a different facility - assisted living, nursing home, etc. You would work with the person’s children in many cases (who may live out of town) and arrange for as smooth a transition as possible.

Those are just some places to start. Please let me know if I can help you in any way.

Hi!
I have been reading your e-mails for months. I just decided to write you and thank you for your articles. I have owned my own business for the past 15 years. I am a nurse and operate a small assisted living facility. It’s certainly trying at times with long hours
caring for the elderly and supporting families facing their loved ones’
memory impairments. I can truly say that only by the grace of our Lord I make it some weeks. The joy of serving others is immeasurable. I have grown in being a business owner in realizing that that my business is not a ministry and my responsibility is to provide a service to the standard of excellence
and a fair price to my clients. My responsibility is to make a reasonable profit, pay above standard salaries, and pay the bills. Being a nurse for so many years interfered at times with proper business sense. However, I feel that I now have a balance. My husband has been very supportive spending long hours without me being home. I am now seriously thinking it is time to extrapalate my self from the business and spend time with my family. I have been relying on the Lord for direction and today a gentleman contacted me stating he was a commercial realtor and wanted to know if I would consider selling my business to an interested party. With the current economic times, I feel this would be a blessing. however, I am cautious and will not blindly say “This is it an answer from God” Now, I am considering a home business I have been investigating for several and I am disconcerted with the obvious scams lurking out in the web. How can I parlay my nursing experience into a internet business? I know my letter is long but any advice would be appreciated. Thank you and God bless you.

I think communication is so important, however, I think sometimes we are under the impression that we’re either good at it or we’re not. But it can be learned and improved. We need to be willing to give the effort to working on it. As you know, JoJo has so many tools to help with that.

Nice to hear from you. Sounds like you have a good potential business. Greeting cards are a BIG business.
I would suggest you take a look at http://www.greetingcardwriting.com - it’s Sandra Miller-Louden’s site. Do you know of her? She has been in the greeting card business for at least 15 years. She has written information to help you get started in this industry.
I would recommend doing a google search on her name, and take a look at the information that’s out there. You can try contacting her and ask her if you have specific questions.

Hi! I just found your blog via Problogger and your most recent post couldn’t be more timely! I currently sell greeting cards to friends and family (totally homemade) but I am looking for better ways to streamline and outsource my card creation. It takes me a lot of time to make one card (I use my nature photography), so I’ve been looking for companies that will print and package for me. The problem is price. Right now I have been selling each card for $2, but I would have to raise my prices if I want to outsource printing (currently I’m looking at companies like Shutterfly, Mpix, Winkflash, Imagekind, etc.). My future plan (after I find a suitable company) is to sell my cards through my personal home website (which doesn’t exist yet). Right now I only sell my cards through word of mouth. Sorry this is so long-winded. Any advice? Thanks for the links you provided…I will surely check them out.

Great idea and it works! My mother-in-law made her living by sewing for about 50 years and worked at it up until her death 3 years ago at age 76. I’ve read that with the current economy, sewing classes are totally full these days!

My mom sews beautifully too and made most of our clothes when we were kids. She makes quilts now that we all treasure. She was always afraid that sewing would become a lost art, but I don’t think it ever will.

Hi Fred,
As far as proofreading jobs, you could try Elance.com. Also, I would suggest you join forums where other business owners congregate. You could try warriorforum.com or other home business type forums (do a search on google.)

Here’s a thought. If you have a financial background, you could specialize in offering proofreading services to financial business owners for financial documents.

If you want to do accountant type work, you could put an ad in your local paper, start a website that could tell about you, your services and pricing. Of course, you would need to bring traffic to your website to make it worth it. There are many free ways to do that, but I am unable to go into them all here.
Possibly specialize in doing bookkeeping/handling money matters for the elderly or the single population. It helps to specialize as then you can focus your efforts in certain areas where you would connect with these people. Otherwise, you get so scattered, it makes it difficult. Plus you get to know the concerns of that particular age group and can become an expert to them in your field.

I hope this helps as a beginning.

Many business owners write articles, reports and ebooks, all that may involve research into a particular topic. Many don’t want to take the time to do the research themselves.

I don’t know specifically what topics they look for, as this will be different, depending on what type of business they’re in. It’s a good idea to choose a particular area that you already have some knowledge and interest in to get started. You can expand later, but in the meantime, you can build up a client following in that particular niche.

Pay will depend on who your clients are.

There is a group on yahoo.com for Disciples Cross and I believe that someone in that group does sell the materials for making crosses less expensively.

I did this and loved th crosses but the cost for material is very high. To bad I pray someone else could come up with a concept like this. I love doing a service for God.

Hi there,
Thanks for your comment. As far as providing links to start this business, this is something you would need to do. You would have to find clients that were in need of your services, and build your business that way. Once you get a few happy clients, hopefully they will refer you to others. Word of mouth is a great thing!
The link to the proofreading guide I provided in the above post is a guide that will help you start a business by giving you information that you need to know. It should make the start up easier, but you still need to find your own clients.

Today, there are many business owners on the internet who look for others to proofread their information for them. I would visit home business type forums, build relationships with people, and eventually offer your services (within the promotion guidelines of the forum.)

Since we have an embroidery and screen printing company, Selanac Embroidery and Screen Printing, we started to offer ads on white paper bags. We chage $20 per business card size or so ad. We print 1,000 bags per set of twenty ad’s.

We allow customers to buy larger spaces if they want and just double, quadruple etc. depending on the number of spaces they take up.

Our customers (businesses) love the concept for many reasons. One is that the ad’s get into the hands of their customers, and 2, because the ad’s are low cost, 3 because they’re sharing the customers of other local businesses, and four your reaching all the people, not just the ones that are online, but those on and offline.

I homeschooled too, for ten years. My kids have since graduated. I didn’t have a home business then, but I think it would have been great to have one and also include my kids in it as much as possible.

I love to work from home because it allows me to keep my priorities in order. I do not have to worry that I will be scheduled to work on a church day or night and I can work my clients around our homeschool schedule. I just learned about the launch of a new Christian business. This business sells cell phones and plans starting at $25 for unlimited calling. They are looking for reps right now, and maybe other commission and salaried positions. It costs nothing to join right now because they haven’t really started yet.
