How To Become A Virtual Assistant

V is, of course, for how to become a Virtual Assistant. I did a series on becoming a VA before I started up this alphabet game. So, I don’t want to duplicate everything I said there.

Virtual Assistants are in high demand today, as more and more business owners are turning to them to take some of the work load. Virtual Assistants do a variety of tasks, such as:

  • Taking/returning phone calls
  • Answering emails
  • Typing/transcription
  • Bookkeeping
  • Marketing services
  • Specific project management
  • Making travel arrangements
  • Working on special projects
  • Various other tasks

You can custom your service to what you feel you do well, however, the more you can offer, the more marketable you will be.

I deal with many online business owners who hire VA’s to take care of responding to their emails, run certain parts of projects they’re working on, etc. A Virtual Assistant has the opportunity to make a good impression for the business owner. It’s kind of like walking into an office and talking with the receptionist. Your first impression is formed right then. It’s the same thing when you’re dealing with someone’s Virtual Assistant. So, you should possess good customer service skills as you will be reflecting the tone of the business.

This is a popular field to start a business in right now. I would suggest taking an inventory of the skills you possess. Do you have enough that you could offer as a Virtual Assistant? You can always learn more as you go along.

    Hi Laurie and Laurie’s readers

If you are considering becoming a virtual assistant, I think the best place to start is on a virtual assistant forum. Get in touch with other virtual assistants and get chatting. We’re a very friendly, sharing bunch who like to help others who are just starting out. I’d suggest you visit a couple of the following sites:

A Clayton’s Secretary – Virtual Assistant Network based in Australia but with members globally

VANA – Virtual Assistant Networking Association based in the US but with members globally

IAVA – International Association of Virtual Assistants

AUKVA – Alliance of UK Virtual Assistants

CVAN – Canadian Virtual Assistant Network

I hope this helps some aspiring virtual assistants!
