How To Start a Tutoring Business

No, I haven’t lost track of my alphabet:-) I know we’re actually on “U” but I couldn’t come up with a home based business that starts with U. So, we’re going to do a “fill-in”, as we will have to do when we get to X and Z!

So, let’s talk about how to start a tutoring business. A tutoring business can bring in some good income. You can tutor kids in academic subjects such as Math, English or a foreign language. For this, you may need a degree in the field you want to tutor in. Check your state’s requirements.

You can also tutor in other areas (non-academic) such as home economics, sports, woodworking, music lessons, etc. If you have a specialty, and you can communicate how to do it to others, this may be a great way for you to build a business.

You can offer your tutoring service to either kids or adults or both.

If you want to tutor in academic subjects, you can either tutor at your home or online. Sylvan has opportunities for online tutors. Again, check their requirements.

For non-academic subjects, I would suggest getting in contact with homeschool groups in your area. Also, you can place ads in publications that would reach your market.

Tutoring can be a fulfilling way to earn some income, as you are passing along your knowledge to help others. It is also a flexible home business, allowing you to take on as many students as you are comfortable with. Consider the time commitment. If you are planning on tutoring in academic subjects to non-homeschoolers, this will require you to work hours after they get out of school, at night or on weekends. Think it through to ensure you are getting into something you will be able to stick with and that will work out with your schedule.
