Interview with Wendy Holmes, VA
Oct 14th, 2009 by Laurie Neumann
Today, we are talking with Wendy Holmes of Hope Business Services. Stop by her website and see what she offers!
1. Can you tell us what business you are in?
I am a Virtual Assistant. I work with small businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profits to market their businesses and to help with clerical support.
2.. How long have you been doing your business?
I started my business about 2 years ago, but I’ve worked as an Administrative and Executive Assistant for about 25 years.
3. How many hours a week do you usually work?
My hours fluctuate depending on what I’m working on. Right now, I’m finishing up my companies newsletter and working on one of my client’s newsletter. Both of them should go out by the end of this week so this week is more hectic.
4. Tell us what an average work day is like for you.
I don’t have an average work day. Most mornings I check my email first to see if there is something from a client or prospective client. Depending on what’s happening, I could spend the next few hours making phone calls, writing press releases, doing database management or internet research, putting together mailings, designing marketing materials or working on online or printed newsletters. I usually work between 20 – 30 hours per week.
5. How long did it take your business to become profitable?
I was lucky. My arthritis made working a regular job a problem. I had a businessman approach me to see if I could do some work at home for him. When I finished that job, a friend of his called me about work. Working for myself allowed me to move from Michigan to Connecticut without a problem. I stay in touch with clients either by phone or email.
6. What is the best piece of advice or tip you could give someone who wants to get started in the same type of business you’re in?
Make sure you can work alone and for yourself. Some people like the idea of having their own company, but without anyone nearby to keep you motivated, some people drift off target. I have even done this myself a bit. You will find that neighbors stop by, family and friends seem to think you do errands for them and before you know it, you can be in trouble.
7. Anything additional you’d like to share?
Pick something that you enjoy doing. If you don’t love what you’re doing, the money isn’t worth it.
My thanks to Wendy for sharing with us!
Great interview!
