Today, we are talking with Alyssa Middleton of Vintage Body Spa. I appreciate Alyssa taking the time to share with us. Be sure to visit her website! (I know I plan to:-)
1. Can you tell us what business you are in?
I own Vintage Body Spa (www.vintagebodyspa.com) where we offer luxurious spa products created with natural, fair trade and organic ingredients. Our tagline is ‘Indulge Your Body’, and you can truly indulge and create a decadent spa experience at home with our products. Best of all, our products are free from sulfates, parabens and other harmful toxins, so you can be confident that you’re putting only the best ingredients on your skin!
2. How long have you been doing your business?
We purchased the company in September, 2007.
3. How many hours a week do you usually work?
It’s hard to say, as I often work in spurts while my toddler daughter is napping, etc. It’s easily 40+ hours a week, as I’m working hard to grow the business. Most of my hours are put in after the family is asleep and I have some quiet time!
4. Tell us what an average work day is like for you.
One of the great things about my work is that every day is different – I may be making products, sending out orders, networking with business contacts, formulating new product ideas, or doing the administrative pieces. It’s never dull, and usually a lot of fun!!
5. How long did it take your business to become profitable?
Final 2008 numbers aren’t in yet, but we estimate there will be a small profit this year, so it took just over one year.
6. What is the best piece of advice or tip you could give someone who wants to get started in the same type of business you’re in?
Research! There are a LOT of bath & body companies out there – figure out what your niche is going to be, where there are gaps in the industry & try to fill those gaps. Figure out what is going to make your company stand out among the rest & play up those differences. Most of all, have fun and remember why you went into business for yourself to begin with – that vision and dreams will help to sustain you on the more difficult days.
7. Anything additional you’d like to share?
Thanks so much for the opportunity to share a little bit about my company! I like your blog and am looking forward to reading future posts!
My Thanks to Alyssa!
