I am so excited to begin this series! Over the next MANY Wednesdays, you will get to meet a home based business owner and learn about their business, how long it took them to become profitable, what a typical day is like for them and more….

It will give you a glimpse into the reality of owning a business as well as spur some ideas of your own on what kind of business you could start.

So, let’s get going…

Today, I”d like you to meet Joan Rudder-Ward. I know Joan from a Mastermind group that we both participate in. She has a heart to serve God and help others in their businesses. Joan also has a heart for young girls - to inspire and encourage them in who they are.

What’s Next?

Well, we finished up our Alphabet game. What’s next on the agenda?

Starting this Wednesday, I will be posting an interview done with a successful home business owner. You will be able to read about what they do, how long it took them to become profitable, what a typical day is like for them, and their advice to those wanting to start out in a business. I’m excited about this because it will give you a realistic look at many home based businesses. So be sure to check back every Wednesday!

Starting next Monday, I”ll be sharing my personal journey with a home based business. How I started, where I am now, and the challenges and victories there have been along the way. Please be sure to check each Monday so you can take the journey with me! You can sign up on the right to receive email updates whenever a new post is added.

Today, I want to share with you a resource I think you’ll really enjoy. While it’s not directly related to home business, all the participants are business owners, so you can visit each one’s websites for a look at what they do.

Well, here we are on our last day of the alphabet game of home businesses. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. And I truly hope you have benefited from it and found a business that you want to pursue. If you haven’t yet, don’t fret - there are many more options out there!

I know we are supposed to be doing a “Z” business, but what in the world would that be? If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment and I”ll be glad to look into it and still do a post on it:-)

So, today, we are substituting in how to start a greeting card business from home. Greeting cards are a multi-million dollar industry. There are some different ways you can become part of this industry, depending on what your skills and interests are.

Well, we are almost through the alphabet. Today, we are on “Y” for starting a yard sign business. You can rent lawn announcements, such as new baby, birthday, graduation, new home, etc. and earn money for the rental of the sign.

It generally costs around $500 to get started in this business. That will cover the cost of the starter kit of signs. As you grow your business, you can purchase additional signs.

Check out the sites below to read about their business opportunities.

Ok, I’m cheating again. We’re supposed to be on “X” but I don’t think you can be an x-ray technician at home:-)

So, we’ll cover another “W.” Selling wholesale products.

With selling wholesale products, you buy the products at a certain amount and resell them at a higher price, thereby making a profit. You can sell your products locally, online (on a website or blog) or on Ebay.

If you want to sell wholesale products, you want to find legitimate wholesale sources. There are many out there who will ruin your reputation as a business owner, so be careful who you go with.

There is one wholesale directory I recommend. It’s the only one certified by Ebay and known to only list legitimate wholesalers. Click on the link below to read all about it.

V is, of course, for how to become a Virtual Assistant. I did a series on becoming a VA before I started up this alphabet game. So, I don’t want to duplicate everything I said there.

Virtual Assistants are in high demand today, as more and more business owners are turning to them to take some of the work load. Virtual Assistants do a variety of tasks, such as:

  • Taking/returning phone calls
  • Answering emails
  • Typing/transcription
  • Bookkeeping

No, I haven’t lost track of my alphabet:-) I know we’re actually on “U” but I couldn’t come up with a home based business that starts with U. So, we’re going to do a “fill-in”, as we will have to do when we get to X and Z!

So, let’s talk about how to start a tutoring business. A tutoring business can bring in some good income. You can tutor kids in academic subjects such as Math, English or a foreign language. For this, you may need a degree in the field you want to tutor in. Check your state’s requirements.

You can also tutor in other areas (non-academic) such as home economics, sports, woodworking, music lessons, etc. If you have a specialty, and you can communicate how to do it to others, this may be a great way for you to build a business.

You can offer your tutoring service to either kids or adults or both.
