Proverbs 31 Woman: What We Can Learn from Her

I’d like to take a few weeks and talk about what we can learn from the Proverbs 31 woman about running a business.  As I read through this passage, I saw quite a bit we could apply to running a home based business.

Today, let’s look at Proverbs 31:16

She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard.”

The Proverbs 31 woman “considered” a field before she bought it.    I think we can relate this to starting a home based business and how you need to consider it before you jump in.  I think people get scammed because they act too quickly and don’t do their research into an opportunity.   But if they took the time to look into it (consider it), they may find out that it isn’t what it appears to be at first, or they may find out that it actually is a legitimate opportunity.   But taking the time to research is essential.

Then, we can see from the second part of the verse, that when she did this, the Proverbs 31 woman made a profit.   I believe we increase the chance of our profit potential greatly when we do our homework before starting something.

It also sounds like this woman invested her profits to further her outcome.  She didn’t go off and spend it all on frivolous things; she invested her profits, which, is what I think we should do too.   I believe we should invest part of our profits back into our business to keep learning  and to keep our business growing.

So, from the Proverbs 31 woman, we learn that:

  • You need to consider a business opportunity before jumping in
  • When you do your homework, you will have a much greater potential for profit
  • You should invest part of your earnings to keep yourself and your business growing

More lessons from this wise woman next week!

It’s great to hear from you. I agree – Proverbs 31 has a wealth of wisdom and inspiration in it.

    Laurie,

Great post. Even though I am a man, I have learned a lot from this passage. There are many great lessons from a Proverbs 31 woman for both genders. I agree that one of the reasons that so many small businesses fail is the sink-or-swim jump-in-with-both-feet attitudes that would-be entrepreneurs oftentimes display. The passion and enthusiasm is a great asset, but without methodical thoughtful consideration and preparation the unexpected (and there seems to be a lot of that) will quickly turn that gusto against us. I see so many entrepreneurs jump out of the frying pan just as quickly as they jumped in.

Excellent comments, Brad. Yes, unfortunately, a lot of business owners don’t spend time researching the opportunity or niche before they get in, and then want to get out of it and into something else. The viscous cycle continues. But if we really take to heart what the Bible says in all areas of our lives, including our business, we will be so much better off.

    Hello Hyacinth,

You are right – their days, as far as the activities they did, are quite different from ours. But I believe the principles are still the same.

    Thanks for your comment:-)
