Catchy  Business Names: Good Idea?

Catchy business names will get everyone’s attention, right? Creative business names will make people take a second look, or so it seems.  This can be true or it can backfire.  Let’s explore this more.

Catchy business names can turn heads as we all like things that stand out from the rest.  But the question is, do the names make sense?  Do they portray what the business is actually about?  If so, then you may have a winner!  If not, you will get people’s attention for a minute or so, but then they will become confused and confused visitors don’t stay long enough to become customers.

As you seek to come up with a catchy business name, make sure it describes what it is you actually do.

So it is with creative business names.  They are a little different than catchy names but the advice is still the same.  Make sure your creative name tells what you do and is memorable.  Creative names can seem great at the time of conception, but they have to be easy and clear enough to be understood and remembered.  Otherwise, you will lose customers because they won’t be able to remember the name of your business when they need what you offer.

I have clicked through some links of very creative and lovely names, only to land on a very generic site and was very disappointed.  So make sure your name matches your business.  “Vicky’s Victorian Treasures” better be just that – items that a fan of Victorian décor would love, not just some generic items that you can find anywhere. What would you expect to find at "Towering Scoops?"  Hopefully,. some pretty big ice cream cones! (Both names were made up.)

Your business name should be catchy and creative, but also highly related to your business and its offerings.  Make it clear, easy to spell and easy to remember.  You don’t want to lose business because someone couldn’t spell your business name correctly, and therefore, couldn’t find it in the phone book.

These are some important considerations before you choose your business name.  We don’t always spend much time choosing a name but you should realize that it can be one of the most important marketing tools you will use.

Maybe you have never thought about your business name as a marketing tool before. That moves it up on the scale of importance, doesn't it?  If you would like to learn more about effective methods of marketing, visit our home business marketing page.
