The Importance of Networking
The importance of networking can be debated, especially from a time standpoint, but I think, it will always come out in favor of it.
Networking is using contacts made in business for purposes that go beyond the reason for the initial contact. The purpose is to further grow the business.
Finding like minded people can really help to increase your business. You can share ideas, strategies, and increase your contacts.
How and where to do you network?
A great way to network is to visit forums (message boards) related to your topic, or niche. Make a comment on posts that are related to your topic. Give some helpful advice. Do not just sign up and start advertising your business. That is considering spamming.
Make comments on blog posts that have a similar topic that relates to your business. You can usually include a link back to your blog or website, which will bring you more visitors.
Become part of open discussion groups on yahoo groups, google groups, etc. Offer some good information in answer to people's questions, and they will start turning to you when they need help.
Be consistent in your posting. Don't visit the forums or group once a month. Try to spend time each day or every other day there. This will help establish you as an expert in your field. Be careful to set a limit to your time spent in this type of activity. Many find they spend much more time there than they planned, so set limits and stick to them.
Be honest and down to earth in your communication. Compliment others on their input.
To sum it up, be a "giver", not a "taker." Learn from others. This will help you grow your business. But always be willing to offer help, share a good resource, and grow with others in the group. This is why networking is important - to grow and help others grow.
