What Is Marketing?

How do you feel about marketing?  I have to be honest.  I never liked it.  I am somewhat introverted, and I have never been good at "selling" myself.  It just wasn't me.  So what did I do?  I put my business out there and hoped for the best.

I always thought of marketing as telling others about what you did, somewhat "pushy-like."  Can you relate? Well, that all changed when I took the course "Getting Business to Come to You!"  I realized there were many ways to market and I could choose ones that didn't make me uncomfortable.  This was GREAT!  I now have several methods of marketing that I actually enjoy!

What is marketing?   Marketing is the act of connecting customers to products (or services.)   Marketing is responsible for all things that cause a desired audience to believe that you are worth trying, choosing, coming back for and telling others (advocacy) about. (definitions from web-strategist.com/blog/2008/03/01/my-definition-of-marketing)

So, simply put, what is marketing?  The means of letting others know about you and what you do.

What do you think of when you hear the word "marketing?"  Selling? Being pushy or obnoxious?  Sweaty palms?  All of the above?

Truth be told, marketing our businesses SHOULD be FUN!!  Let me share with you what I have learned...

Small Business Marketing

Small Business Marketing should be fun!  I'm sure one of the reasons you started your small business is that you enjoy it.  So, when it comes to  marketing your small business, that should be something you enjoy too!

Well, I have some GREAT NEWS for you.  What if I told you that you don't have to "sell" to market?  You can just be yourself and choose marketing methods that are comfortable for you and go along with your personality.

Imagine having people come to YOU.   Without breaking down any doors to give your sales pitch (you won't even have to break down any virtual doors!), you can have a continual stream of customers.  How?  By being who you were created to be, and becoming known in your field.

Here's a confession.  I HATE selling and promoting myself.  I am shy by God's design and instead of working against my basic personality, I have come to realize there are ways to market my business without it making me squirm and shrink back.

Well, you can imagine that I was THRILLED when I came across the "Getting Business To Come To You" (also called "Marketing for Introverts") course, written by Paul and Sarah Edwards.  Now, this was a course for me!

“I learned to recognize my natural marketing style and that what I like to do can be marketing! I increased my business 20% in two months.”

John Schairer, M.D., Ph.D., Psychiatrist

I will be your personal coach for the twelve weeks.  I will give you feedback, encourage you, guide you, hold you accountable for doing the lessons ,and share my own homework assignments with you.

Working with Laurie over the past 12 weeks has been a lot of fun and very enlightening. Before taking this class I had no clear vision of what marketing meant. Another area in which this class helped me was to determine what my niche or specialty would be. Like so many I was trying to incorporate too much into one business.  This class and Laurie showed me how to narrow my specialty down to one concept.

Now I am no longer intimidated by the thought of marketing and have a clearly defined niche for my business.  Laurie’s guidance and encouragement are responsible for this.  Thank you, Laurie, for helping me overcome my intimidation of marketing!

I look forward to working with you again.

Cathy Moore, Virtual Office Specialty

Here's are some quotes from the book.

"You never have to use marketing methods that feel uncomfortable or awkward to you."

"The best marketing activities will be those that enable you to be most fully yourself."

"Effective marketing is a matter of identifying what you enjoy most , what comes naturally to you, and what best fits into your schedule and your budget.  There are plenty of options for us all."

Now that's all good news to me!

It doesn't matter whether you are just starting your own small business or have run it for years.  Maybe you don't even have a business yet, but want to find out how to market it before beginning one.  If you want to increase your reach and get more customers coming to you, this twelve week course is for you!

When you sign up for this course, you will receive:

  • Getting Business To Come To You" book - it will be delivered right to you from Amazon.  This course focuses on the first eight chapters of this book (there are 13 in all - the rest can be used an awesome reference tool.)

"I'm still in business after 6 years thanks to "Getting Business to Come to You." When I was in the planning stages, I was worried because I thought the only way I could get business was to cold call. I knew I wouldn't be able to do this. I read lots of books, but
your intro to this one stopped me in my tracks."

Peggy Duncan, Productivity Workshops and Consulting

You are invited to read the Introductory chapter.  You will see for yourself how good this information is and how easily it can be applied.

Remember, when you're trying to decide on small business marketing strategies, you don't have to participate in things that make you uncomfortable.  If you don't like speaking to groups of people, then promoting yourself in that way should not be on your list of marketing strategies.

What is Marketing?  The answer will be different for everyone, and this course is designed so that, at the end of it, you will have your own tailor-made marketing campaign.  One that you can continue to use over and over, and can be tweaked as you go along and want to try new or different marketing strategies.

"This course has been the smartest thing I have done for myself."

Chris Trout, SunFire.
